Day 009 – October 31, 1819

October 31, 1819
October 31, 1819 – Sabbath – Today we were permitted to enjoy the privilege of the public worship of God. At 12 o’clock the mission family and the ship’s company assembled on the quarter and attended divine service conducted by B. Thurston. Singing, prayer, sermon, prayer, benediction. The discourse on the nature of prayer and the motives to its performance from James 4.3. was seasonable and refreshing.

Day 010 – November 1, 1819

November 1, 1819
November 1, 1819 – no entry. (Thaddeus Journal)

Nov. 1st (8 days out). Middle part, fresh gales with a heavy cross sea, the brig laboring hard and making much water. (James Hunnewell)

Could the transactions of the first week have been penned, I am sure, while they would have called forth sensations of pity from your heart, would at the same time afford merriment. Sorrow and despondency were depicted on every countenance, while scarcely a look of love or complacency was discernable one towards the other. (Lucia Ruggles Holman)

Day 011 – November 2, 1819

November 2, 1819
November 2, 1819 – Yesterday and today we have experienced many gales. We roll upon tremendous waves, and suffer much with the sinking motion. Early this morning shipped a sea, which stove in the starboard waistboards and overturned the caboose. No very material damage or danger. Heavy rains and squalls make dreary hours.

Nov. 2d. At 5 a.m. strong gales and a heavy sea. At 6 a.m. shipped a sea which stove in the starboard waist-boards and upset the camboose. Lat. obsd. 38° 55′ N. Our passengers suffer much, but do not murmur. Prayers had in the cabin every evening at 8 p.m. (James Hunnewell)

Nov. 2. – A violent gale commenced last evening. The elements rage with fury, while our little bark safe in the hand of providence is carrying us rapidly from our country & home. (Samuel Whitney Journal)
