Kauila wood was almost universally agreed to be the best wood to make the ‘ūkēkē (however, hau, ʻiliahi (sandalwood,) and other woods were used. Some suggest koa was too firm to make the ‘bow.’) (Roberts)

However, the ūkēkē was not a Hawaiian Jew’s Harp; the Jew’s Harp is structurally different, with a vibrating tongue fastened to on end of the body and free from the other. (Roberts)

Early musicologists erroneously referred to instruments of this type as a “Jew’s harp”. No Jewish community worldwide has been documented as using the instrument in any form. Ethnomusicologists call it a jaw harp but according to the structure of the instrument, it isn’t a harp either. The ʻūkēkē would technically be a mouth zither because the strings are secured at each end of the wood sound board and the mouth is used to amplify the sound. Just being technical……
