As I have stated, these posts are now coming to an end. Actually, the initial intent was that this was a one-year experiment; it lasted for 8 ½ years.
I appreciate all the kind words.
I assure you that I will miss these posts more than you.
The passion/obsession of preparing them has been fulfilling, and throughout this process I have learned a lot about the place where I live and that I love.
I need to focus on some critical issues related to my work and cannot get distracted by a daily historical summary about Hawaii’s past.
I mentioned the plan is to create an interactive map (like Google Earth) that will show where the different stories took place; that is delayed.
In the meantime, all of the posts are available on the www.ImagesOfOldHawaii.com website, and will be for the foreseeable future.
When you get to www.ImagesOfOldHawaii.com hover over ‘Archive’ for a drop-down listing of different broad categories the posts are listed under.
Click ‘Archive’ or any of the headings and a ‘Search the Website’ function is available. A one-word search will lead you to prior posts that include that word.
So, anyway … thank you. It has been fun (anything worth doing is worth having fun doing it).
Thanks, again, for your support and kind words.
Peter.
… and a fun time was had by all.

I appreciate all the kind words related to the historical summaries I have prepared over the past 8 ½ years.
Two weeks and counting, then pau … I assure you that I will miss them more than you.
The passion/obsession of preparing them has been fulfilling.
Throughout this process, I have learned a lot (boy, that’s an understatement).
Anyway, some may not know that I am actually still actively working and have been throughout this process.
I recognized a while back that I was approaching some critical times related to my real work and it was clear to me that I need to focus on the projects I am working on.
I have several significant projects that I am helping folks with on Lāna‘i that are coming to a head during the summer and latter part of the year.
Likewise, I am tasked with preparing the permitting and environmental assessment for the first decommissioning of an observatory off of Mauna Kea. That, too, is coming to a head during the summer and latter part of this year.
Related to Mauna Kea, I am also on the team preparing the update to the existing Master Plan for Mauna Kea, as well as the Comprehensive Management Plan update and other matters on Mauna Kea.
I also have some odds and ends on different parts of other Islands that I am dealing with.
With all of that, I need to focus on these things and cannot get distracted by a daily historical summary about Hawaii’s past.
To help you fill in the gap, I am hopeful to get an interactive map (like Google Earth) up on the www.ImagesOfOldHawaii.com website that will distract many of you, as you search the icons at the place on the earth where each of the stories happened.
Each icon is a story. When you hover over an icon you get the title; click on it and you get the 2 paragraph summary that has been in Facebook and elsewhere; click the ‘Click for More’ and you get the full post.
The image shows only some of the stories and their location (there are a whole bunch across the globe, far east, the continent, etc.) (Each icon represents a story, at the place it happened.)
So, anyway … two weeks and counting.
Thanks, again, for your support and kind words.
Peter.

I joined Facebook on January 24, 2009. Then, on September 30, 2011, I posted my first message.
In doing so, I made a commitment to post something every day and I also committed to do it for a year.
Because of my work in government, as Deputy Managing Director for Hawaiʻi County and Director of the State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), I have had the opportunity to see some places and deal with some issues that many others have not had the same opportunity.
So, I planned to share some insights and places with others. In addition to those, I also planned to share some of the recent stuff we learned while working on various planning and related consulting projects across the state.
So, there is a bunch of historical stuff, including images. As time went on, this matter of making meaningful posts turned into a daily research project.
My interest turned into a passion (or obsession, as Nelia says.) It consumed all of my “spare” time – weekdays, evenings and weekends.
I have learned so much in the last few years year about the place I live; it has been a great learning experience.
OK, here’s the deal.
My “one year” is long come and gone.
Some may not realize the time commitment to research and edit these historical posts – in addition to finding images and maps to help illustrate the message.
For the past several years, it has been like another job, or two.
To those who read and appreciate these posts, thank you.
What does that mean for the future?
I’m not sure.
But, as far as posts go, for now, this is it … All Pau.
This is a reminder that I have prepared and scheduled posts up to June 1, 2020 – that could be the last day.
Some have suggested I put these together into a book. However, rather than putting these into some traditional, bound, coffee-table paperwork, I see these posts as a new form for “books” (except I have had control over what is posted each day.)
I am working on getting the posts linked into an online map (actually, I have a version of that I have been working on, it’s pretty cool) and/or an App, so these people, places, times and events can also be seen on a map/aerial image, where they happened.
It may not be completed and up and running by June 1, but I have an agreement with a programmer to get it online as soon as possible.
Anyway, thank you, again; it has been a great eight years and a wonderful ride (a virtual “E” ticket.)
We are fortunate people living in a very special place. Let’s continue to work together to make Hawaiʻi a great place to live.
I will still keep active the website where the full posts – you may continue to see images and maps and the short summaries at: www.ImagesOfOldHawaii.com. The link to the online map will also be there.
But for now, at least on June 1, 2020, the daily historical posts will come to an end.
Thank you.
Peter.
